Lewis University communications students gain insight from industry professionals at PR firm

The National Communication Association Student Club at Lewis University took a career exploration field trip to visit JSH&A Communications, a public relations firm in Oak Brook. The trip served as a networking opportunity and provided insights on the field of public relations.

Alyssa Cicero, assistant account executive of JSH&A Communications and recent Lewis University graduate, spoke to students about the importance of building media lists and how to draft the perfect media pitch. Other topics discussed were social media’s connection to public relations, interview tips and job searching techniques. JSH&A Communications also provided a brief overview of a day in the life of a public relations practitioner, and concluded the field trip with a tour of their office.

“I think being able to visit JSH&A Communications just gave us all a good first-hand look at what a public relations agency does. Professors can talk everyday in class about what public relations people do, but nothing beats seeing it for yourself,” said Nicole Krage, public relations student at Lewis University. “We were able to see a public relations work environment and get a feel for what they do everyday.”

NCA members that attended the field trip included Lauren Barnes, Danielle Curtis, Mayra DeLaRosa, Nicole Krage, Nicole Olson, Jade Osowski, Ross Reed, Shada Shublaq, Kim Stedronsky and Ryan Tadych.

The National Communication Association Student Club is an academic organization at Lewis University. The organization promotes the study, teaching and application of principles of communication through education and social functions. While connecting members with students from all communication majors and minors, NCASC provides an outlet for members to explore the communication field in both professional and scholarly aspects.

Lisa O’Toole, assistant professor of communications, is the moderator of the Lewis University NCA Student Club. She coordinates the career exploration field trips for communication students.
