Lewis University nursing students raise $3,600 for Advocate Children’s Hospital

Published: December 28, 2013.

Lewis University nursing students in the Professional Development I class participated in two Service Learning Projects for the Fall 2013 semester that raised $3,600 in support of the Lewis University Family Assistance Fund for Advocate Children’s Hospital. The accelerated students sold T-shirts, and the traditional students sold Yankee Candles to friends, family and members of the Lewis community.

Class representatives including Matt Ronchetti, Jessica Falco, Roxana Gonzalez, Jason Girron and Darren Pepple organized the fundraising efforts alongside the leadership of Anne McShane, assistant professor of nursing, and student chairs, Laura Trevillian and Olivia Albano. The organizers collaborated with WLRA Radio to help promote the sales through radio announcements and the Student Nurses Association (SNA) to post plans on the SNA Facebook page.

The Lewis University Family Assistance Fund is the result of service learning collaboration between College of Nursing & Health Professions’ Professional Development course and College of Arts and Sciences’ Communications Department for the benefit of hospitalized children's families. The funds are used to assist families of hospitalized children in their greatest time of need. In the past, the funds have been used to pay for transportation to and from the hospital, for children to have needed medication or outpatient services, medical equipment, clothes when being discharged, bus passes and airline flights to the hospital.
