Published: June 15, 2024.

Lewis University Certified Flight Instructor Katelyn Gall of Channahon, Ill., will race for a second time in the Air Race Classic June 18-21. The Lewis University Alumna will race with Lewis University Aviation Student Laura Carreno of Melrose Park, Ill., and a team name of “Charlie’s Angels”.

Last year, Gall raced with alumna Makaylah Schwark of Bourbonnais, Ill., and finished in 20th place overall and in the top six collegiate teams. Gall is a commercial-multi engine rated pilot.

Carreno is an instrument-rated private pilot currently working on her commercial license. She also works as an Aircraft Dispatcher at Lewis University and Des Plains Public Library.

The Chicago Area Business Aviation Association is sponsoring the Lewis University team again.

The race will begin in Carbondale, Ill., and end in Loveland, Colo. Go to the Air Race Classic website to follow the teams’ progress through the eight stops.

The Lewis University duo will join almost 50 other teams of women pilots in competition from around the country, flying a total of about 2,500 miles (about the width of the United States) across the span of four days.

ARC draws competitors of all ages, from teenagers to veteran pilots in their 80s, and from all walks of life, from college students to professional airline pilots to military veterans to teachers, writers, doctors and businesswomen.

The historic contest traces its roots to the 1929 Women's Air Derby, aka the Powder Puff Derby, in which Amelia Earhart and 19 other female pilots raced from Santa Monica, Calif., to Cleveland, Ohio. Today, the ARC is the epicenter of women's air racing, the ultimate test of piloting skill and aviation decision-making for female pilots of all ages and from all walks of life.

Lewis University is an innovative Catholic university offering market-relevant undergraduate and graduate programs to 6,500 students.
