August 23, 2023, Excessive Heat Warning Notification

Published: August 23, 2023.

The National Weather Service has issued an Excessive Heat Warning from 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 23 until 8 p.m. Thursday, August 24, for our Romeoville Campus area. This Excessive Heat Warning predicts dangerously hot and humid conditions with afternoon heat index values of 110 to 115 expected, with locally higher values possible.

In response, some of our Welcome Week activities have been moved indoors. Please visit https://lewisu.edu/welcomeweek/ to consult the updated schedule of events. In addition, we will be providing additional water stations, encouraging the use of certain buildings as “cooling spaces,” and making other efforts to extend Lewis University hospitality to visiting family members and friends.

The JFK Student Recreation and Sports Center, Library, Sancta Alberta Chapel, and the Brother James Gaffney, FSC Student Center. There is also ample seating available in air-conditioned dining areas around campus such as Charlie’s Place, Courtyard Café, Flyers’ Den, and Laverne and Dorothy Brown Dining Hall. Visit https://lewisu.edu/campuses/romeoville/maincampusmap.htm for the campus map with the locations of these spaces.

The National Weather Service urges individuals to take the following precautionary/preparedness actions.

  • Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, and stay out of the sun.
  • Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside.
  • Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
  • Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing when possible.
  • Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.
Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 9 1 1.

The Lewis University Police Department is available 24/7 at 815-836-5911 or 815-836-5222 for non-emergencies.

If it is determined that conditions have become too severe to operate university functions, the Lewis University Emergency Notification System will be activated. Emails, texts, and voice calls will be sent to our students, faculty, and staff. The notification also will be posted at www.lewisu.edu and on university social media.

Any updates or changes will be posted on www.lewisu.edu.

Stay cool and hydrated!
