Four Lewis Students Participate in Mclaughlin Social Justice Institute at Christian Brothers University

Published: July 17, 2023.

Four Lewis University students were among those who increased their awareness, empathy, and advocacy for social justice issues during the June 18-July 1 McLaughlin Social Justice Institute at Christian Brothers University in Memphis, Tenn.

The four Lewis University students who took part in the academic, community, and field experience program learned how their own social identities affect their engagement with others.

  • Ashlynne Mills, an early childhood and special education student from New Lenox, Ill.

  • Jennifer Ly, a sociology student from Minooka, Ill.

  • Jazmyn Stewart, a business administration student from Richton Park, Ill.

  • Nicole Manke, a social work student from Sheridan, Ill.

The McLaughlin Social Justice Institute offers a transformative experience where students delve into critical social justice topics, engage with diverse perspectives, and develop the necessary skills to become change-makers in their communities.

Throughout the intensive two-week program, the students took part in a wide range of activities, workshops, and discussions led by distinguished scholars, practitioners, and community leaders. Blending classroom instruction, visits from leading experts in law and medicine, and trips throughout the Memphis community, students learned about social justice and inequity, particularly for people living in poverty and on the margins.

By immersing themselves in an inclusive and collaborative learning environment, the students gained valuable insights into the complexities of social justice issues and explored innovative strategies for addressing systemic challenges. They addressed some of today’s most critical issues, such as generational poverty and homelessness, food scarcity, challenges faced by immigrants, and inequity in education and healthcare.

Lewis University is an innovative Catholic university offering market-relevant undergraduate and graduate programs to 6,500 students.
