Thurman and Zia Offer Legal Literacy Program for Valley View

Published: December 19, 2022.

Lewis University Justice, Law, and Public Safety Studies professors Tammy Thurman and Huma Zia are providing a Legal Literacy program for Valley View Community Unit School District 365 students. The free, voluntary program promotes student accountability and reduces out-of-school suspensions.

The six-week class sessions at the Step Campus of Brooks Middle School in Bolingbrook serve as an alternative to suspension for district students who have committed behavioral infractions that warrant a 10-day school suspension. Classes are designed to expose student participants to legal principles and aspects of the law that are important to and have an impact on the youth population.  Lessons and activities teach students about the consequences their actions have on themselves, their victims, and their communities.

Lewis University is an innovative Catholic university offering market-relevant undergraduate and graduate programs to 6,500 students. Sponsored by the De La Salle Christian Brothers, Lewis University is nationally recognized for preparing intellectually engaged, ethically grounded, and globally-connected graduates who impact the world for the better.
