Dr. Marie Meyer Honored with ISMAA Early Career Teaching Award

Published: April 4, 2022.

Lewis University Assistant Professor of Mathematics Dr. Marie Meyer was honored with the 2022 ISMAA Early Career Teaching Award at the Illinois Section of the Mathematical Association of America's 2022 Annual Conference at Millikin University in Decatur, Ill.

The award honored Meyer for her significant impact on the mathematics program at Lewis University. Her creativity and innovation in the courses engage students with experiments and present new ideas. She is described as being energetic, engaging, student-focused, and incorporates a plethora of teaching techniques in her classes including, but not limited to, group work, activities, clicker questions, and active lectures.

This past semester, she taught five courses all in completely different modes/approaches. Meyer provides accessible support and cares for her students while also balancing rigor and high expectations for them.

Some common themes from student feedback are that students like Meyer’s enthusiasm, creativity, availability, and ability to explain things clearly without making students feel inferior.

In addition to being a member of multiple university and college committees, Meyer has served the greater mathematical community through a variety of activities including serving as a member of the Southwest Chicago Math Teachers' Circle, running student activities and workshops, and helping to judge undergraduate research projects at national mathematics conferences.
