No. 14 Lewis Men's Cross Country Places Ninth at National Championships

The No. 14 ranked Lewis University men's cross country team placed ninth at the NCAA Division II National Championships Saturday (Nov. 20). The 10 kilometer race took place at the Abbey Course, where the Flyers finished with 347 points.

Lewis started out the race in 12th place at the 550-meter mark and moved up to 10th place at the 1.3K and 3K marks before dropping back to 14th at the 4.3K and 5K splits. The Flyers moved up to 12th at the next three splits before a big final kick moved them into ninth as all five runners improved their place over the final 1.2K.

The Flyers were paced by Garrett White (Alsip, Ill./Alan B. Shepherd), who finished in 51st with a time of 31 minutes, 47.3 seconds. White started in 115th place at the 550-meter mark before improving 59 places at the 1.3K mark with a 2:10.3 split. After falling back to 74th at the 5K mark, he improved 10 places at the 6.7K mark and another seven in the final 1.2K.

Daniel Arimi (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) clocked in with a time of 31:58.3 to finish 57th. After starting 108th in the first split, Arimi gained 24 spots at the first split with a 2:12 split. He also gained 39 spots over the final four splits.

Anthony Farmer (Elgin, Ill./Burlington Central) finished 85th with a time of 32:19.5, while Dustin Macuiba (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) had a time of 32:28.8 to place 96th and Zach Fresenko (Louisville, Ohio/Louisville) placed 102nd with a time of 32:34.7. Anthony Pena (East Moline, Ill./Pleasant Valley (Iowa)) (33:10.4) and Jacob Hinchley (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport Township) (35:03.8) also competed for the Flyers.

Farmer gained 13 spots in the final split, Macuiba advanced five spots, Fresenko gained 22, Pena moved up 19 and Hinchley gained four spots for Lewis.

Grand Valley State won the National Championship with 43 points, while Adams State finished second with 84 points and Colorado Mines was third with 123. The individual title went to Isaac Harding of Grand Valley State, who finished the race in 29:58.3.
