Fifth Ranked Flyers Clinch Second Straight MIVA Regular Season Title With Sweep of Loyola Chicago

Lewis University's fifth ranked men's volleyball team won its second straight Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association regular season title and sixth MIVA regular season title overall with a sweep at No. 10 Loyola Chicago on Thursday evening at the Alfie Norville Practice Facility in Chicago, Ill.

The Flyers improve to 16-2 overall and 11-2 in the MIVA and clinch the number one seed in the MIVA Tournament which is scheduled to begin on Saturday (April 10). The Ramblers drop to 13-4, 9-4 MIVA.

Lewis dominated early as it opened the match on a 14-3 run. The Flyers still led 19-10 when Loyola began to climb back into the set thanks to an 8-2. After a timeout, Lewis closed the set scoring the final four points to win 25-18.

The Ramblers took an early 4-2 lead in the middle stanza, but the Flyers proceeded to go on a 13-4 run to take its largest lead of the set at 15-8 on an attack error by Colton Brooks. Loyola made another late charge closing to within 24-22 after a kill from Cole Schlothauer which forced Lewis to take its final timeout of the frame. After the timeout, a service error from Ben Montplaisir gave the Flyers the 25-22 victory.

Lewis jumped out to a 4-1 lead to begin set three, but the Rambles came back and eventually took a 12-11 lead on a kill from Montplaisir. The Flyers responded with a 5-1 run to regain the lead at 16-13 when Ryan Coenen (Franklin, WI/Franklin) and Kevin Kauling (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) stuffed Schlothauer at the net.

LUC rallied once again this time going on a 7-4 run to tie the stanza at 20 after a service error from Kyle Bugee (Cupertino, Calif./Homestead). Lewis closed the match strong as it outscored the Ramblers 5-1 to complete the sweep 25-21. Coenen had two kills in that final run while Bugee added one and Kauling had a service ace.

The Flyers hit .264 for the contest with 38 kills against 14 errors in 91 attacks. Coenen led Lewis with 13 kills while Bugee finished with a double-double recording 10 kills and 10 digs. Tyler Mitchem (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook HS) added eight kills in the contest. Kauling finished with 33 set assists.

The Flyer defense held Loyola to a .124 attack percentage with 35 kills against 23 errors in 97 swings. Schlothauer had a match-high 14 kills while Luke Denton added 11 kills. Garrett Zolg had 27 assists and Denton finished with nine digs.

The two teams will meet again on Friday evening at the Alfie Norville Practice Facility at 7 p.m.
