COVID-19 Update - Face Coverings, Social Gatherings, University Response

Published: September 4, 2020.

As we near the end of the first week of the fall semester, I’d like to congratulate everyone on making it happen and making it work.

With more than 900 student residents moving onto our campus last week and the start of blended and face to face classes this week, we have seen an increase in the amount of COVID-19 cases connected to our university community.  As of this afternoon, we are tracking 13 new cases that will be indicated on the tracker web page tomorrow.  As a reminder, this tracker indicates all positive cases that have been reported by students, faculty, and staff who have been on our Romeoville or Oak Brook campuses recently.

While this represents a tiny fraction of our community population, we understand we are not in isolation from the rest of society and that COVID-19 is present in all communities across the nation and across the world.  We continue to monitor metrics that track COVID-19’s impact on our campus, support the members of our community directly impacted by COVID-19, and work with public health officials to make sure that we are providing the best possible mitigation and response efforts.

Gatherings on Campus Are Limited to 25 People

Those mitigation efforts include limiting gatherings to 25 people or less on campus, other than in controlled classroom environments, which is in accordance with Illinois Region 7 Mitigation Measures implemented on August 26.

Face Coverings Are Required

Also recommended by public health officials, face coverings are required to be worn indoors and outdoors on all our campuses. Visit to read our complete university face coverings policy.

Use the LewisU App

Students, faculty and staff must use the LewisU App for a variety of mandatory processes.

·         Submit the COVID-19 Symptom Screening

·         Report a Positive COVID-19 Test Result

·         Check-In for Face-to-Face Class - Please note there are multiple QR codes inside the classroom as well so students do not need to line up in the hallway to scan the QR code at the door

·         Reserve a Study Space – This can be an area for students to take an online class if needed

University Response to a Positive Case

Once a positive COVID-19 test result is reported through the Lewis U app or our Lewis University COVID-19 Hotline at 815-588-7000 or, several response actions are taken.

·         A hotline member responds to individuals who submit the report within 8 hours

·         Will County Health Department is notified and their directives are communicated to our students, faculty, and staff

·         Response services are activated, such as human resources, housing, facilities, custodial, and dining

·         Support services are offered as needed including an Employee Assistance Program, counseling, and academic services

·         Students are advised to contact their instructors and employees are directed to communicate with their supervisor

·         Students are given return to class guidelines and employees are given return to work guidelines to be followed when the timing is appropriate

As we head into this Labor Day weekend, I hope you and your family find some time for rest and relaxation. And still, please be mindful that we cannot take a break from our diligence in precautions and prevention measures.  We are grateful to all those who are observing the Flyers Promise and taking the extraordinary steps to stay healthy and protect each other while on and off campus.  Please continue to wash hands, maintain physical distancing and avoid group gatherings, cover your mouth and nose with a face covering when around others, and monitor your health daily.

We need everyone’s work in association to keep our community healthy and safe. Thank you for your patience, flexibility, and understanding during these challenging times.
