NCAA II Cancels Fall Championships

Published: August 5, 2020.

The NCAA Division II Presidents Council announced on Wednesday (August 5) the cancellation of the 2020 fall championships which includes the national championships for men's and women's soccer, men's and women's cross country, field hockey, football and women's volleyball. The complete release from the NCAA can be found at NCAA.org.

The decision was made to cancel due to the operational, logistical and financial challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic. The council made the move after the NCAA Board of Governors directed each division to make a decision on its fall sport championships. The Board of Governors also directed each division to meet various requirements to compete in the fall. Those directives include that all member institutions apply the resocialization principles to fall sports and set a 50% sponsorship threshold for a fall sport championship to be conducted, among other requirements. As of Wednesday, 11 of the 23 Division II conferences had announced they will not be competing in the traditional fall season.

With the Board of Governors' directives, the Division II Presidents Council determined that it was not feasible to hold fall championships as planned or to postpone them to the spring while prioritizing the health and well-being of the student-athletes.

The Great Lakes Valley Conference had proactively postponed the fall league championships for the sports of men's and women's soccer and women's volleyball, which are sponsored by Lewis, and football on July 27. This fall's GLVC Cross Country Championships are still scheduled for October 24, while men's and women's golf and tennis are still slated to compete in their non-championship segments.

The GLVC set a deadline to make a determination about the winter sports, which affects Lewis' men's and women's basketball teams for Oct. 1. The sports of women's bowling, men's and women's swimming, and men's and women's indoor track and field will be permitted to compete as scheduled.

More information concerning Lewis Athletics, GLVC championships and NCAA II championships will be released as it becomes available on LewisFlyers.com.
