COVID-19 Update - Classroom, Campus, Cleaning, Housing, Dining, Albuquerque, Athletics

Published: August 6, 2020.

Thank you to all who have signed the Flyers Promise & Acknowledgement of COVID-19 Information & Protocols (Fall 2020). In the spirit of solidarity inspired by our Mission value of Association, over 1,000 students have pledged responsibility for their own well-being and to act with great care, civility, and profound respect for each other.

With less than three weeks until the start of classes in the fall semester, below are a few ways we are working together to help keep all members of the Lewis University community safe.

Campus Space Utilization

Please observe the signage on campus to maximize our mitigation efforts. We have considered traffic flow in buildings, dining halls, classrooms, labs, studios and other spaces with particular attention to surge times and choke points, as well as spacing of students, faculty and staff. That includes designating exit and entry doors for classrooms, dining halls, library, and other spaces.

  • Observe room capacity limits posted. Otherwise, assume the maximum number of individuals in the room should not exceed 50 people.
  • Pay attention to the floor markings, staggered furniture arrangements, additional space between podiums and student seats.
  • Only use the elevator if needed. We’re trying to limit usage to those with physical limitations that do not allow them to use the stairs. We will be opening stairwells for regular use, even ones reserved for emergency egress in the past.
  • Use the arm pulls in restrooms to exit the restrooms without direct hand to handle contact.

Cleaning of Facilities

Designated custodians will perform regular rounds throughout the day to disinfect high touch point areas such as door handles, furniture in common areas and restrooms around campus. However, we need your help in keeping our community healthy:

  • Use the provided hand sanitizer dispensers at regular intervals throughout campus.
  • Use the paper towel dispensers in restrooms. We have disconnected all hand dryers.
  • Resident students are asked to use the disinfecting products provided in common living spaces, such as kitchens and laundry rooms between cleanings by custodial services.
  • Resident students in traditional halls are asked to use the disinfecting products provided between bathroom cleanings by custodial services.
  • Resident students in suite-style halls are expected to use the cleaning products provided to clean their own restrooms.

 Classroom Procedures

In our preparations, we collaborated with faculty and students about the best and safest way to have a meaningful and effective learning experience while following the guidance of the Centers for Disease Control, the Illinois Department of Public Health, and the Illinois Board of Higher Education. Visit fall 2020 Campus Plan for detailed information on classroom preparations and revised procedures for the fall semester. Some new procedures include:

  • Students scanning a QR when entering a classroom
  • All individuals are required to wear a face covering
  • Furniture is arranged to promote physical distancing
  • No food or drink is allowed in the classroom
  • Supplies will be available for students wanting to disinfect their space
  • One-on-one conversations between faculty and students after class must take place outside of the classroom

Residential Life

Our Office of Residence Life and many others are working in association to provide a safe, healthy and engaging residential experience this fall. Contact the Office of Residence Life at (815) 836-5581 or reslife@lewisu.edu with any questions or concerns.

  • All Residence Halls are open for the Fall 2020 semester.
  • Residents have been assigned move-in times beginning the week of August 24.
  • Healthy community standards in the residence halls promote self-care and care for others.

Dining Services

Our food and dining provider, Sodexo, is taking a very cautious, measured approach to give students, faculty and staff the confidence to enjoy meals on campus, as well as the flexibility to choose the dining options that make them feel most comfortable. Visit fall 20 Campus Plan/dining for updated information on dining services as well as information on downloading the Bite+ App for online ordering.

Albuquerque Classes

Following New Mexico state guidance, our Albuquerque campus will conduct classes online for the fall semester. We will continue to monitor guidance from the state, the CDC, and the higher education community in New Mexico as we maintain flexibility and goal to provide the best possible educational experience for our Albuquerque students.

Lewis Athletics

Yesterday, the NCAA Division II Presidents Council decided Division II’s seven 2020 fall championships are canceled due to the operational, logistical and financial challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, our fall sports of men's and women's soccer, women’s volleyball, and cross-country will not have an NCAA championship. Regular-season competition and GLVC Championships for our fall sports are still being finalized. Continue to visit lewisflyers for the latest update on our Athletics program.

Your efforts in keeping our community safe and healthy are appreciated. Thank you for understanding that we all have to take responsibility as individuals in order to keep our community healthy. Visit our return to campus website for the latest updates on how to keep our campus healthy as well as plans for our Fall 2020 Semester.
