Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) - June 25 Update

Published: June 25, 2020.

On Friday, June 26 the State of Illinois moves to Phase 4 in its Restore Illinois plan. Phase 4 signals that progress is being made with a continued decline in positive tests for COVID-19 and an increase in hospital capacity.

Phase 4 enables many organizations to resume more activity with appropriate health protocols in place.  As we continue our gradual return to campus, we will adhere to best practices of the American College Health Association (ACHA) and comply with requirements of the Restore Illinois plan, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the Will County Health Department.

This transition will be slow and purposeful. Any activity we resume on campus will be evaluated and modified to maintain the health and safety of our community.

Our success during Phase 3 with the initial groups returning to campus has taught us many lessons on how to proceed as we bring more people on campus in preparation for the Fall semester. For example, the portion of our aviation and STEM students who are currently engaging in experiential learning on campus are using enhanced health and safety procedures, including regular self-screening health checks.

In the weeks ahead, more people will be on campus as we prepare to have face-to-face instruction and expanded residential living. This means life at Lewis will look different when you return to campus. Students, employees, and campus visitors will be asked to adhere to health protocols, such as completing a self-screening of COVID-19 symptoms check, wearing a face covering while in public areas of campus, and social distancing. Signage is posted around campus with current guidance for social distancing, physical spacing, cleaning, disinfecting, and hygiene practices to limit viral transmission.

Please note, our plans for the summer remain unchanged:

  • Summer courses will remain online.
  • All employees will continue to work remotely unless the work function they are performing on that day cannot be done remotely. All on-campus work requires prior approval from a supervisor. Please refer to  Phase 4 Guidelines for Employees.

As this pandemic and our efforts to slow the spread of COVID-19 continue, we will send updates on modifications to our university practices as necessary, and please visit return to campus for updated information on our plans for the Fall semester.

I appreciate all of your efforts to help keep our community safe, healthy, and learning.

Dr. Christopher Sindt
Provost
