Pull a Plane at Lewis University to Support Special Olympics Illinois

Published: March 25, 2019.

The ultimate tug-of-war competition is looking for teams to battle in pulling a 24-ton Republic Airways jet. Lewis University and Republic are the presenting sponsors of the Plane Pull event to raise funds and awareness to benefit athletes of Special Olympics Illinois.

The Plane Pull is 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 27, 2019, at Lewis University Airport, 1 George J. Michas Drive in Romeoville, Ill. Spectators are encouraged to attend and watch this momentous competition.

Each team must raise a minimum of $500 to participate. Teams consist of a maximum of 10 members but can choose to pull with fewer than 10, if desired. Groups compete to pull the plane 12 feet in the fastest time. All proceeds collected through the Plane Pull benefit the more than 23,000 traditional athletes and over 17, 000 young athletes (ages 2-7) currently participating with Special Olympics Illinois.

Teams can compete in one of three divisions:

• Open Division: Ideal for companies, school teams, clubs, friends and families.

• Public Safety Division: Law enforcement, firefighters, paramedics, EMT, DNR, DOC and military personnel. Teams need to have at least five public safety competitors to qualify for this division.

• Lewis University Division: A division created solely for students, staff and alumni of Lewis University. Teams need to have at least five competitors affiliated with Lewis University to qualify for this division.

“This is a great opportunity for a group to make a difference in the lives of athletes in the Special Olympics of Illinois,” said Eric Jones, co-chair and assistant professor of the Aviation and Transportation Department at Lewis University.
