Mumps Outbreak Update 1-11-19

Published: January 11, 2019.

According to the Will County Health Department, there are now six confirmed, 14 probable, and two suspected cases of the mumps connected to the Lewis University Romeoville Campus.

These new cases also change the date of exclusion from our Romeoville campus for those susceptible to the mumps. Students, faculty, and staff who have not submitted proof of immunity to the Lewis University Center for Health & Counseling Services, or those with medical or religious exemptions, are considered susceptible.

All those who are considered to be susceptible to mumps should exclude themselves from campus until at least January 26, 2019. The conclusion date of the incubation period may continue to change based on new information received by the Will County Health Department.

Public health officials have recommended all Lewis University students, faculty and staff receive an MMR booster vaccination during this mumps outbreak on the Romeoville campus.

A Jewel-Osco Pharmacies pop-up immunization clinic will be available for those who wish to receive a MMR booster from noon - 6 p.m. Monday, January 14, 2019, in the University Dining Room. Individuals should bring their insurance card. Jewel-Osco Pharmacies will be able to provide point-of-service billing with emailed receipts. Most insurance carriers cover this as a preventative benefit. If you do not have insurance, there will be a discounted price for the vaccine of $90.

Students, faculty and staff should contact their healthcare provider with any additional healthcare questions or concerns.
