Mumps Outbreak Update 12-6-2018

Published: December 6, 2018.

Thank you for working together to comply with the recent mandates regarding the Will County Health Department’s designation of a mumps outbreak on our Romeoville campus. There has been significantly increased activity in Health Services around the mumps outbreak. Currently, there are one confirmed case and nine probable mumps cases.

Out of concern for safety and health, all Commencement Ceremonies and related activities planned for the weekend of December 15-16, 2018 are rescheduled for the weekend of May 17-19, 2019. Specific details about the May 2019 Commencement Ceremonies and related activities will be forthcoming before January 1, 2019. In addition, all August and December graduates will be receiving a more specific email today from Dr. Kurt Schackmuth, Commencement Coordinating Committee Chair.

This rescheduling will not delay the traditional timeline for December graduates to receive their diploma and have access to transcripts. After we certify degrees, diplomas will be mailed home to all December graduates without outstanding financial obligations to the university. It is expected to be around February 19, 2019, as usual. Graduates can visit for information on ordering transcripts. As it is customary, all December graduates will have access to their transcripts online beginning December 21, 2018.

All other events through December 28 are canceled, including non-academic related events, co-curricular activities open to the public, and home athletic events.

All courses will continue to meet on their regular schedules until the end of the fall term, including final exams. Faculty can refer to yesterday’s communication from the Provost concerning the administration of final exams. As a reminder, all grades are due at the usual time, Tuesday, December 18, 2018.

Despite the cancellation of many events, all university offices will remain open and maintain their normal office hours. Staff and faculty are expected to follow their normal schedule through the university’s annual holiday closure on December 21, 2018. The Spring Semester is expected to begin January 14, 2019, as scheduled.
