“Disney’s The Little Mermaid” Sold Out at Lewis University Philip Lynch Theatre

Published: July 9, 2018.

The Philip Lynch Theatre (PLT) made department history! For the first time in many years, the summer musical sold out before the 4th of July.

Disney’s The Little Mermaid will be performed on July 20-22 and July 26-29 and is recommended for patrons of all ages. Evening performances are 8 p.m. and the Sunday matinees are 2:30 p.m. In addition, there is a matinee performance at 4 p.m. on July 28.

The PLT theatrical license with Disney and Music Theatre International, the publisher who holds the performance rights to The Little Mermaid, have in place seating restrictions for the PLT production so when the curtain rolls up on the PLT production, there will still be some empty seats, explained Jo Slowik, theatre manager. The PLT seats 242 patrons total, and for The Little Mermaid, PLT is bound by the contract to seat only 190 patrons. That’s 52 seats in the PLT that will be empty at performances. No one will be seated in the 39 balcony seats, and the remaining 13 seats in section 4 due to obstructed viewing because of the set design.

With every PLT production, the theatre has secured and purchased the performance rights to a show. The details of a theatrical license may include whether the production is amateur or professional, the price of tickets, the size of the venue, the financing of the production, and the location of the production. Some publishers offer special licenses for performances at festivals or competitions. More importantly, theatre publishers can put seating restrictions in performance license contracts.

Patrons looking to purchase tickets can call the box office to check for released seats. They are sold on a first come; first serve basis.

Patrons can also volunteer to usher for a performance. Usher seating is not guaranteed, but they’ll see the show for free. Ushers are asked to arrive 60 minutes prior to a performance and wear business casual attire. Call or stop by the box office, (815) 836-5500 to sign-up to usher.

Starting one hour prior to a sold-out performance, box office staff will begin a waiting list. At 15 minutes prior to showtime, in the event of last-minute cancellations or no-shows, and at the discretion of the management, tickets may be released and given to patrons on the waiting list with priority given to current subscribers. The box office does not take waiting list names over the phone; patrons must arrive in person to sign up. The box office opens 60 minutes prior to scheduled performances.

There is no guarantee that seats will become available, but the PLT will do its best to accommodate patrons.

Ticket prices are $12 for an adult, $11 for students and seniors. Lewis students pay $2 with an ID. Group tickets are available for parties of 15 or more. Running time of the show is approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes with an intermission.

Tickets are non-refundable. For more information, patrons can follow the PLT on social media pltlewisu, call the box office (815) 836-5500 Monday through Friday 1-4:30 p.m., or check-out the PLT Website at www.lewisu.edu/plt.

The theatre is located on the main campus in the Oremus Fine Arts Center on Route 53, Romeoville.
