Published: April 17, 2018.

Lewis University’s director of Veterans Affairs Roman Ortega Jr. received the 2018 Veterans Knowledge Community Supra et Ultra Award from the prestigious NASPA Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education that marks Lewis University as one of the best military programs in higher education.

Ortega said, “It means a lot to be recognized by my peers for the years I have dedicated to Student Veterans of America - Illinois and Lewis University. The NASPA VKC Supra et Ultra Award is reserved for a member who has gone above and beyond in their service to NASPA VKC and military-connected students throughout the country.

“I love this moment that we are in, the reinvestment of the Forever G.I. Bill into student veterans and many other initiatives propelling the student veteran narrative in the right direction,” the Plainfield resident continued.

Ortega leads at the state level as president and CEO of the Student Veterans of America - Illinois as well at the university level as director of Lewis University’s Office of Veterans Affairs. He offers assistance to veterans and eligible family members beginning or continuing their education and removes barriers to attaining a high-quality education. To help student veterans’ transition to higher education, he guides Lewis University in developing a number of resources and provides links to numerous government agencies to help student veterans take full advantage of their military service.
