Lewis University CaMS Cyber Defense Group Wins in National Competition

Published: April 10, 2018.

Six Lewis University computer science students took first place in the Department of Energy's 2018 National Cyber Defense Competition April 7 at Argonne National Laboratory in Lemont, Ill. The Lewis University team prevailed over 28 other teams from around the country to win the title of national champions.

The students, who are part of the student-run Cyber Defense Group based in the Computer and Mathematical Sciences department, worked on setting up, troubleshooting and protecting cyber-physical systems associated with critical infrastructures.

The CaMS Cyber Defense Group members include Joey Casalino of Shorewood, Gabriel Diaz DeLeon of Wheaton, Johny Kegaly of Clarendon Hills, Ryan Meeker of Joliet, Brandon White of Burbank and Brian White of Orland Park. They are led by faculty moderator Dr. Jason Perry, assistant professor of Computer and Mathematical Sciences.

“This competition reinforced the cybersecurity skills, concepts and tools our students learned in the numerous cybersecurity courses in the computer science curriculum,” Dr. Ray Klump, chair and professor of CaMS, said.

The students have been training since September and participated in a variety of other cyber defense competitions, including the Illinois Collegiate Cyber Defense competition in February and Iowa State National Cyber Defense Competition in March.

“One of the best things about this group is the camaraderie they have developed pursuing and complementing each other's interests in cybersecurity as they extend what they've learned in their computer science coursework to new challenges,” added Klump. He continued, “Their success also demonstrates how the problem-solving skills, critical thinking skills, and deeply technical content of a computer science education equip students to tackle a wide variety of complicated, but important problems.”
