Published: April 3, 2018.

The Illinois Chapter of the Mathematics Association of America named Dr. Amanda Harsy, assistant professor of computer and mathematical sciences at Lewis University, the recipient of their 2018 Early Career Teaching Award.

The prestigious award recognizes outstanding achievement and promising potential in teaching mathematics. It also recognizes those who have an impact on mathematics education beyond their academic institution. Harsy received the award at the 2018 Trisection Meeting of the Illinois, Indiana and Michigan Sections of the MAA.

As a leading founder of the Southwest Chicago Math Teachers' Circle, a forum for mathematics teachers at all levels to exchange strategies and best practices for teaching mathematics, Harsy helped elevate the teaching of mathematics throughout the Chicagoland region.

“I want my teaching to instill a growth-mindset of learning, emphasizing that learning is not based on the amount of intelligence possessed by a student, but that understanding can be developed through effort and motivation,” commented Harsy. She continued, “These goals as an educator have shaped how I teach, how I serve, and how I approach research.”

Harsy earned a master’s degree from University of Kentucky and a doctoral degree from Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis. She was selected as a national Project NExT Fellow (Gold Dot-14) in 2014 and selected as an Illinois Section NExT Fellow in 2015.
