Equity in STEAM


A five-part seminar which offers research-based strategies to increase equity in STEAM for all students. This seminar is ideal for K-8 educators. The seminar formats are Online only and Hybrid. Hybrid means that people can join online or in person. Participants will earn two professional developments for each session attended. Equitable, inclusive, and innovative K-12 STEAM systems are the foundation to build the next generation of STEAM leaders.

NOTE: Registration is required.

Location & Time

All seminars will be held from 4-6 p.m. (CST). Hybrid sessions will be held at the Romeoville campus of Lewis University.

Cost

$25 per session. A discount ($15) is available if you register for all five sessions.

Presenter

Dr. Natalie Coleman

Presenter Dr. Natalie Coleman is the Founder and CEO of After the Peanut. She was born and raised in Joliet, Illinois, and is passionate about all things STEM! She has over 15 years of experience as an educator and is also a combat veteran having served as a Military Police Officer in the Illinois Army National Guard. She holds an Education Doctorate from the University of Illinois. Some of her professional work includes developing trainings on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Cultural Competency, School Attendance and Next Generation Science Standards. She has been a National Geographic Educator of the Week, National Science Teacher Association Presenter, TED Innovative Educator, South by Southwest Education Mentor and Panelist and an Illinois Science Assessment Writer. Besides leading After the Peanut, Dr. Coleman is a Will County Board Member and Adjunct Education Professor at Lewis University in Romeoville, Illinois.

#1 You're Smart for a Girl!

Target Audience: K-8 Educators

In order to reach more girls in STEAM, systems must be in place that increase opportunities for girls to gain interest and confidence in STEAM. Participants will leave with:

  1. Tools to promote successful women in STEAM throughout the curriculum
  2. How to create a long-standing school wide STEAM mentoring program
  3. Improving instructional strategies to increase success for girls in STEAM

#2 The 12 Foot Diving Board
Date: Wednesday, February 23, 2022

Often in K-8 educational systems STEAM takes a backseat to core subjects. It is only through courageous acts to shift antiquated systems that schools can take a deep dive into STEAM. During this session participants will:

  1. Learn how to lead through fear
  2. Analyze roadblocks to success
  3. Create an action plan in 9 areas that move organizations toward equity in STEAM

#3 Put Me in Coach!
Date: Wednesday, March 16, 2022

In order to build equitable systems a good team has to be in place. During this session, participants will:

  1. Conduct an individual analysis of themselves and their team
  2. Use a rubric to identify the most critical areas for their organization to address in order to move forward
  3. Create a system wide “game plan” for all team members to implement

#4 Pivoting
Date: Wednesday, April 20, 2022

Participants will analyze major pivots in education post COVID-19 as well as shifts in corporate America that have led to the success of organizations. Participants will leave with:

  1. A thorough understanding of how proactive shifts move organizations forward
  2. Strategies for success from model STEAM organizations
  3. A plan to pivot in their own organization in order to improve equity in STEAM

#5 What about NGSS?
Date: Wednesday, May 18, 2022

Target Audience: K-8 Educators

Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) were adopted by many states in 2013, however there is still confusion and misunderstandings of how to teach and assess using NGSS. The ideology behind NGSS is teaching in three dimensions. Upon completing this session, all participants will:

  1. Have a deeper and more thorough understanding of NGSS
  2. Understand how to implement NGSS with fidelity in STEAM and science spaces
  3. Be able to create three dimensional assessments
