International Student ServicesPassport ValidityWhat is a passport? Your passport, is the small book like document issued by your own government, which permits you to leave and re-enter your own country, and enter other countries. Most individuals must show a valid passport to apply for a U.S. visa or to seek admission at a U.S. port of entry. Canadians and the Passport Requirement A major exception to this rule applies to Canadian citizens and some Canadian landed immigrants entering from within the Western Hemisphere, citizens of Micronesia and the Marshall Islands who have proceeded in direct and continuous transit to the U.S., and British citizens who reside in Bermuda or Canada entering from within the Western Hemisphere. Validity Requirements Your passport must be valid for a minimum of at least six months from the date of expiration of the initial period of your admission into the United States or your planned initial period of stay unless your country has an agreement with the U.S. that allows your passport to remain valid for six months beyond the expiration date. If you need to renew your passport during your stay in the U.S., consult your own country’s consulate or embassy.
