Financial Assistance for International Students

Lewis University provides some financial assistance to qualifying international students because of its commitment to a diverse student population. This assistance is limited and the application process is generally competitive. If admitted, international students are awarded financial aid according to the University's policies and the eligibility requirements for each scholarship or award program.

While American students are eligible for federal and state financial aid, these government-based programs are not available to international students. Despite these limitations, Lewis University awards a significant amount of assistance to international students. Financial aid for international students is in the form of scholarships, loans, grants, and work awards. During the 2003-04 Academic Year Lewis University awarded US $395,494 to 36 of the 78 international students on campus with an average award of $10,985 per award. There are several categories of scholarships for which international students are eligible. These include:

  • Athletic Scholarships
  • Academic Awards
  • Transfer Student Scholarships
  • Talent Awards (Music and Theatre)
  • Graduate Assistantships
  • Work Awards

If you are a International student admitted to Lewis University with financial aid, you will generally continue to receive aid for each year that you demonstrate need, however, you should check your award letter to determine the duration of each part of your award. If you are an International student admitted without aid, you might receive it later only in the case of drastic and unforeseen changes in your family's circumstances or if you are awarded an assistantship position.

Many Lewis international students find assistance through on-campus employment. Graduate students may apply for assistantships through their academic department or the Division of Student Services. The largest Graduate Assistantship program on campus is offered through Residence Life and Housing Services and these positions are for Residence Life and Housing Services Coordinators. A similar program exists for undergraduate students who have previously lived on campus and these positions are called Resident Assistants. Contact the Human Resources department or the Division of Student Services for information about these awards.

Part-time employment on campus is a possibility for graduate and undergraduates students who are eligible through their F1 or J1 student status or those on other visas who have work authorization. International students should be aware that Immigration regulations greatly restrict off-campus employment opportunities and certain departments, such as the College of Business, will not allow its students to participate in Curricular Practical Training opportunities.
