Christopher Thurlby, Alpha Sigma Lambda Member

My name is Christopher Thurlby and I will be graduating in December 2012 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Air Traffic Control Management from Lewis University. I am also obtaining my Masters of Science in Aviation and Transportation Safety from Lewis University and will be done with that next year.

Currently, I work in a Level II Trauma Center in the Emergency Department as a Paramedic and also a local Fire Department. I have extensive studies in various healthcare areas that include cardiology and emergency medicine. I currently live in the Chicagoland area and work and go to school full-time. I am a private pilot and, in my free time, enjoy golf and traveling.

Ever since I was little, I had a dream to be somehow involved in aviation. Once grown up, I never really though it was a dream achievable, so I went the healthcare route that included Echocardiography and being a Paramedic. After doing this for a little time, I realized my dream was not fulfilled and I wanted it to be. That is when I came to Lewis University to continue my education and reach my dream of becoming a Pilot and an Air Traffic Controller. While at Lewis, I have met some outstanding professors and staff that made me feel like their son in guidance and advice. That is something I will miss greatly after I depart from Lewis. However, after departing Lewis, I hope to use the guidance that has been instilled in me to achieve a position with the FAA as an Air Traffic Controller or some other position with an airline or airport.

I have not necessarily had a nicely paved road of life that I have been able to go down. All my life, I have had to work for what I have. Education is one of those things. Though I have support from many, I have worked tirelessly to be able to afford my own education ever since high school and I think I am proud of my determination and stamina to do that.

If I had to offer any “Tips for Success” I would have to emphasize that no one can go down the road of college alone. Embrace family, friends and loved ones to gain support in order to succeed. Above all, believe in God and trust that you have what it takes. Take it step by step and enjoy each one of those steps. In the end you will look back and say, “whoo hoo” I made it!
