Maureen Keane and Rochelle Santopoalo led a career assessment (new directions for your career) workshop reviewing Meyers-Briggs Type Indicator results.

A hands-on workshop on getting started with LinkedIn was led by Mike Cherry and Bill McKeown while George Forsa led another on building your network on LinkedIn.

In a lively interactive session, alumni Joan Strainis (’11), Connie Tippett (’09), and Mike Maher (MAOL) shared their approaches to advancing or securing their career.

The Organizational Leadership Department is pleased to announce a new concentration being offered to students pursuing their Master’s degree in Organizational Leadership. Organizational and Leadership Coaching is a multidisciplinary-based tool that can provide professionals with a distinct advantage in an increasingly competitive marketplace. Coaching has grown rapidly as a profession within the past decade in businesses, schools, and organizations.  This new four course concentration explores the theory and research from which coaching has emerged and teaches the skills needed to become an effective internal or independent Organizational and Leadership Coach.

The courses are conducted synchronously online.  This means that you can attend class from the comfort of your own home computer! This technology supports interactivity and collaboration, creating a powerful virtual learning experience. The courses will meet from 6 until pm one night a week for 8 weeks.

Note: LL546 is a prerequisite for  LL547, LL548 and LL549.

• Learn coaching strategies based on research and evidence in the field.
• Determine personal coaching styles, guided by well-researched models.
• Develop the ability to coach on the phone and face-to-face.

Dr. Neena Gopalan has been apart of the Lewis Community since August 2012. During this time Dr. Gopalan has taught many courses that enriched student’s academic career. Most recently, Dr. Gopalan is teaching Intro to Psychology. Dr. Gopalan received her PhD in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from Kansas State University. Below you will find a short discussion on her views of adult students and Lewis overall.

Q. What encouraged you to teach at Lewis?

A. What encouraged me to teach at Lewis were the courses that I have the opportunity to teach, the nature of job responsibilities, and yes, the location as well.

Q. What do you like about teaching adult students? Why?

A.  Adult students are mature and willing to work hard. I admire how they try their best to juggle between their professional/ work life, family life and academic life. Hats off to that! 

Q. What is your favorite movie or book? Why?

A. My favorite movie(S) would be those that one can relate to or see it as possible in one’s life. Drama, suspense, investigation type movies, etc. are my favorites. I also very much enjoy watching foreign films.

 

Q. What encouraged you to teach? Why?

A. There is something intrinsically motivating about imparting knowledge to others.

When graduating from high school, our sights were set on getting out in the world. Joining the working world had shown us that a college education was an important asset to career advancement. After a few classes at junior college after high school, life took us in another direction. Our focus became providing for our children, and developing a career. Since our family was our primary focus and the children are only small for a very short time, college was put on hold. While we operated a small business, Wayne pursued an Associate’s degree at Joliet Junior College. The certificate he earned in electrical automated systems benefitted him at his job as he earned a promotion.  We had both come to a point in our lives where our lack of college education became a limiting factor in our careers.  Fortuitously, we received an invitation to a Lewis University Open House in the mail. After hearing all that Lewis had to offer, we decided that the School for Professional and Continuing Education was the right fit for us. Laura added some transfer classes from Joliet Junior College while attending Lewis University.  Our experience at Lewis has been fantastic. We have had the opportunity to work with some wonderful teachers, facilitators and peers. Within weeks of graduation, the job opportunities are already opening up, and we are off on a new adventure as we begin new careers.
