Dr. Neena Gopalan has been apart of the Lewis Community since August 2012. During this time Dr. Gopalan has taught many courses that enriched student’s academic career. Most recently, Dr. Gopalan is teaching Intro to Psychology. Dr. Gopalan received her PhD in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from Kansas State University. Below you will find a short discussion on her views of adult students and Lewis overall.

Q. What encouraged you to teach at Lewis?

A. What encouraged me to teach at Lewis were the courses that I have the opportunity to teach, the nature of job responsibilities, and yes, the location as well.

Q. What do you like about teaching adult students? Why?

A.  Adult students are mature and willing to work hard. I admire how they try their best to juggle between their professional/ work life, family life and academic life. Hats off to that! 

Q. What is your favorite movie or book? Why?

A. My favorite movie(S) would be those that one can relate to or see it as possible in one’s life. Drama, suspense, investigation type movies, etc. are my favorites. I also very much enjoy watching foreign films.

 

Q. What encouraged you to teach? Why?

A. There is something intrinsically motivating about imparting knowledge to others.

At Lewis University, undergraduate students who have completed 12 graded credits in a semester are considered for the Dean’s list if they have a term GPA of 3.25 or above.

When JTHS Infant Childcare Director Deborah Clark learned that Joliet Central freshman KiJuan Sullivan was named Student of the Month for English, it was a moment of celebration, pride and emotion.

Because the moments leading up to KiJuan’s accomplishment tell a story of perseverance. They tell a story of a teenage mother who beat the odds with support and with guidance.

The story began when KiJuan’s mother, Terese, was a student at Joliet Central High School. Terese was an honor student who graduated high school early, but juggling high school and parenting was not easy. The Joliet Township High School Infant Childcare Center was there to help care for her son, KiJuan. “I know that if the Center had not been there, I would not have been able to finish high school,” she said.

Terese recalls the difficulties of teenage parenting. Both her parents worked and could not watch KiJuan while she was at school. “I remember one time KiJuan was sick and I had to take a test. I exhausted every option before pleading with my mother to care for my son for a 50-minute time period while I took this test,” she said. “I had to rush down to the office immediately after taking the test to meet my mother so I could go home and care for my son and so she could go back to work.”

“There were a few female students in the office that were pulling back the blanket on his car seat and ‘oohing and aahing,” she recalls. “One girl commented on how lucky I was to have my mom babysit and how easy I must have it. My mother corrected her and told the girl she was NOT the babysitter. I also told the girls that this was not easy and that I rarely had any help. If I did not have the Infant Childcare Center I wouldn’t have even been there at that moment profusely thanking my angry mother for watching my son while I took a test. Come meet your fellow HR professionals!  Lewis University’s student chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management would like to invite you to our first meeting of Spring term, next Tuesday, February 7, 5:00-6:00 PM in A150. There is no need to formally join the national organization, but there is a need to meet the HRM majors and minors on campus and continue your networking efforts. The agenda for this meeting includes setting our schedule for the term and we would like to have you be part of the discussion.  Tell us what you are interested in seeing in the upcoming months. Fall class LJ497,  ASPS seven-member class along with their instructor visited Daybreak Shelter in Joliet Monday night.  It is run by Catholic Charities with lots of help from churches and volunteer groups.  Our  class presented Daybreak with a check for over $1300.00 and $800.00 in new items requested by the center. The class designed the project, collected money and goods from businesses, family and friends, and went there to deliver the funds/goods and took a tour of the facilities. Most of the students brought family members with as well. We all thought the facility was clean, well organized and important to the community.

The class exceeded their goal by 40%.  I think you can be proud of the ASPS program and what this class accomplished as its applied research project.
