Mission Statement

Our campus recycles because our Mission value of Knowledge informs us of the challenges to our Earth produced by a lack of environmental consciousness. This results in all of us using Wisdom by adopting sustainable choices.

Our campus recycles because it demonstrates our commitment to all forms of Justice including environmental justice and because our commitment to Association extends to our Earth.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is expected of students and staff?
Lewis University asks that you think before you throw materials into the trash, “Can this be recycled?” A good rule of thumb for paper is, “If you can tear it you can recycle it!”

What is the goal of the Lewis University recycling program?
Our goal is to recycle 25% of all our trash this year. Then to continue to increase the recycling rate each year.

What can we recycle? And what is not recyclable?
We have provided a list on the next page to guide you. That is why it is so important to keep this handout in a safe place for future reference.

What has changed that we need to know about?
There are recycling units and containers in hallways, in classrooms, in residence rooms, at entrances to some buildings and in dining areas. A trash container is next to each recycling container.

What should we do if we have a problem or an idea?
We have provided contact information on the next page for your convenience to answer your questions. Any ideas that will help LU meet our goals are greatly appreciated.

What Can Be Recycled in Recycling Containers at Lewis?

  • Glass: empty bottles and jars
  • Aluminum and steel: empty bottles and cans
  • Plastics: empty jugs and bottles with one of the following symbols:

  • Paper: any type of paper including cardboard (exceptions listed below)

What Can be Dropped Off for Recycling:

  • Printer and Toner Cartridges (Shipping and Receiving Dept.)
  • Batteries (Facilities Dept.)
  • Cell phones (IT Dept.)

What Can’t Be Recycled at Lewis?

  • NO toweling or tissues NO blueprint paper NO photos
  • NO wax coated paper NO carbon paper NO microfiche
  • NO plastic bags NO plastic caps from bottles NO plastic covers

RECYCLING FACTS

  • Lewis University throws away over 30% of our recyclables each day.
  • 1 ton of recycled mixed paper = 17 trees.
  • Recycling mixed paper saves 40% of the energy it takes to make paper from trees.
  • Recycling 1 ton of mixed paper saves 7,000 gallons of water and results in 74% fewer air pollutants.
  • Recycling 6 aluminum cans saves the energy equivalent of one full can (12 oz.) of gasoline.
  • Recycling one glass bottle will save enough energy to run your computer for two hours.
