|The Flyer earns eight awards from the Illinois College Press Association

The Flyer continued its award-winning tradition Feb. 23 when the publication’s editors accepted eight awards at the Illinois College Press Association Newspaper Convention at the Doubletree Hotel in Chicago. Student editors, writers and designers from 33 universities competed for the coveted awards.
Julie Szamlewski, layout editor for the print edition, received an honorable mention award in the open category for an advertisement she designed. The advertisement, published in the Sept. 17 issue, promoted the benefits of writing for the school newspaper. Szamlewski competed against layout editors and designers from the largest universities throughout the state.
The online edition was recognized by the ICPA with a General Excellence award. David Hansen, online editor in chief, accepted the honorable mention award in the open category on behalf of the entire staff. The online staff consists of: David Hansen, editor-in-chief, Michael Gates, assistant editor, Andrea Earnest, online community manager, Will Hoffman, special projects editor, Eric Hernandez, photo editor and Tyler Jankowski, assistant photo editor
Michael Gates, assistant editor for the online edition, accepted a second place for a news photo award in the Non-dailies, school enrollment 4,000 or more category. His photo complemented the story “Students observe Veterans Day through community service.”
Kevin Kuchler, the photo editor for the fall semester, earned a second place award in the Non-dailies, school enrollment 4,000 or more category for a sports photo of the women’s volleyball team.
Alex Gasick, sports editor during the spring 2012 semester, received an honorable mention in the Non-dailies, school enrollment 4,000 or more category for his sports column “Guillen’s words inflict monumental pain,” which was published in The Flyer’s April 16, 2012 issue.
Jennifer Prokop, print editor-in-chief for the 2011-2012 academic year and Julie Szamlewski, layout editor, were recognized with a third place award for sports page design in the Non-dailies, school enrollment 4,000 or more category. Prokop and Szamlewski worked together to create a sports page for the Feb. 6, 2012 that was both well-written and beautifully designed.
Shelby Ray, contributor, earned an honorable mention for sports photo.
The Flyer reports news and provides a forum for the discussion of issues relevant to the Lewis University community through a biweekly print medium and its online counterpart www.thelewisflyer.com. Its editorial staff consists of 16 students who publish the newspaper in a manner consistent with the Lasallian mission of Lewis University and the accepted norms of American journalism.
