Robert Bergman, Instructor of Marketing in the College of Business, was honored for exemplary volunteer service with the Lewis University De La Salle Medallion. The servant leader was honored for building community partnerships and fostering service, knowledge, and association, as the university’s mission values suggest. Students in his service learning courses have assisted 16 community sites in the past two years. Beneficiaries include Hospital Sisters Mission Outreach, Catholic Charities, Cornerstone Services, Schools & Tutors on Wheels, the Bridge Teen Center and Child Care Resource & Referrals. He also encourages service from students outside the classroom as a faculty moderator of the Delta Sigma Pi chapter. It is a national fraternity for business students and professionals, with more than 250 active chapters across the country. Zeta Xi, the Lewis chapter, provides students with great opportunities for networking, social activities and community service. Bergman was recently named to the Strategic Planning Committee for the Diocese of Joliet Catholic Schools. Bergman is among a dozen other prominent community leaders and school administrators, in the greater Joliet area, crafting a strategic plan for the nine Catholic Schools in the Diocese. Their mission is to envision the future of the schools from various perspectives related to their mission, resources, opportunities and needs. The Committee is tasked to develop a framework for setting goals, strategies and evaluative procedures related to seven areas of critical importance in the schools, from teaching and learning to commitment to continuous improvement. Lewis University is a Catholic university offering distinctive undergraduate and graduate programs to nearly 6,500 traditional and adult students.
