Lewis University students and faculty present at Nanotech 2013

Lewis University students and faculty presented their nanotechnology research at Nanotech 2013, the world’s largest multi-industry research-to-commercialization gathering. The TechConnect World event included the National Innovation Summit & Showcase partnering with leading Federal Agency programs along with the nation's top commercially viable innovations.

Dr. Jason Keleher, chair and assistant professor of chemistry, presented on behalf of Lewis University students Samantha Rinehart, Amy Mlynarski and Samantha Brain and faculty mentors Dr. Jim Rago, associate professor of biology, Dr. Bill Chura, assistant professor of biology. The team’s research was “Biomimetic Antimicrobial Hydrogel Nanocomposite for Next Generation Wound Management Materials,” which discussed hydrogel, nanocomposite and antimicrobial topics.

Other institutions presenting during their session included Noble Bond Ltd of New Zealand, Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand and the National Science and Technology Development Agency of Thailand.

A portion of the research was completed by Rinehart during the 2012 Summer Undergraduate Research Experience at Lewis University. The research explores the development of a nanocomposite wound management material that incorporates biomimetic polymers as the core building block coupled with antimicrobial nanoparticles, which also aid in the overall functionality and structural rigidity. The work moves toward addressing the formidable challenges in wound healing through the development of wound management materials that are bacteriostatic, anti-viral, fungistatic, non-toxic, highly absorbent, non-allergic, breathable, hemostatic, biocompatible, and a scaffold for cell growth, while providing mechanical stability.

The poster presentation of “Biomimetic Antimicrobial Hydrogel Nanocomposite for Next Generation Wound Management Materials” also earned second place honors at the 2013 Lewis University Celebration of Scholarship Poster Contest.
