Lewis University Awarded Funding to Host White Coat Ceremonies that Champion Compassionate Care

Published: August 28, 2017.

Lewis University’s College of Nursing and Health Professions was selected to receive funding to host a Gold-AACN White Coat Ceremony for Nursing, which underscore the importance of humanistic patient care.

The Arnold P. Gold Foundation (APGF) and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) selected 50 schools of nursing across the nation to receive funding. “Today’s patients expect their healthcare providers to show compassion and engage them directly in decision-making related to their own care,” said Dr. Richard Levin, president and CEO of The Arnold P. Gold Foundation. “We are delighted to continue our collaboration with AACN this year and expand the important work underway to reach nursing students early in their programs with a message that compassion matters.”

The Lewis University White Coat Ceremony typically consists of the recitation of an oath, an address by an eminent role model, and a reception for students and invited guests. The Gold-AACN White Coat Ceremony for Nursing will include students receiving a specially designed pin, funded by the grant, which serves as a visual reminder of their oath and commitment to providing high quality care.

“Our College’s heritage was built on concern for the individual – those who we teach and those who they will serve as healthcare professionals,” explained Dr. Peggy Rice, Dean of the College of Nursing and Health Professions. “Our mission is to provide quality educational opportunities to a diverse student population who will then go out and make a positive impact on the world.”

Lewis University’s College of Nursing and Health Professions has been developing nurses at all levels for more than 40 years. The faculty work with students to develop a compassionate, holistic approach to patient care, addressing physical symptoms while caring for the heart, mind and soul. Lewis University nurses become expert practitioners and innovative leaders who will transform practice in an increasingly complex healthcare system.
