Pre-Pharmacy

Overview

A career in pharmacy offers the student the ability to work as part of the health profession team through the distribution of drugs as well as providing patient(s) with information about the medications and their use. Pharmacy programs are required to grant the degree of Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.), which replaced the Bachelor of Pharmacy (B. Pharm) some years ago. With the degree change, most pharmacy schools moved away from the previous “vocational” model of education to very strict clinical programs, mirroring the other health professions in many ways. Consequently, while it was fairly common to see persons entering schools of pharmacy with as little as two years of undergraduate preparation, this trend is rapidly reversing with 3+ years (and the undergraduate degree) becoming the “norm” for successful applicants.

Lewis University offers high school seniors a unique opportunity to apply concurrently to both undergraduate and pharmacy school in our Dual Admissions Program with Chicago College of Pharmacy at Midwestern University (Downers Grove, IL).

Dual Acceptance Program:
Midwestern University – Chicago College of Pharmacy
Lewis University

Program Eligibility:

  1. Students must score in the top quartile on a College Entrance Exam (ACT:25 OR SAT: 1700)
  2. All pre-requisite course work must be complete at Lewis University within 2 years.
  3. A cumulative 3.2 GPA on a 4.0 scale.
  4. A grade of “C” or higher must be obtained in all courses (“C-“ is not acceptable).
  5. Students may not retake courses to achieve a higher grade and maintain eligibility.

Students must apply to Lewis University and submit a concurrent application (fee $25) to CCP. Both applications will be reviewed by the Admissions Office at Lewis and by the pre-professions director. Provided the student meets all criteria outlined in the “Program Eligibility” section, the pre-professions director will forward all applications to CCP Office of Admissions at Midwestern University. All successful applicants will be notified by mail of their admissions status at Midwestern University.

Students accepted into the Dual Admissions Program are required to sign a matriculation agreement and to submit deposit fees in accordance with the following schedule:

  1. $250 upon acceptance
  2. $250 by May 1 of the freshman year
  3. $250 by January 1 of the sophomore year

All fees are applied toward the student’s first quarter tuition at CCP. If the student does not successfully complete (or chooses to withdraw from) the program, a refund is granted (less a $150 administration fee to CCP).

Students who do not fulfill all the eligibility requirements can apply to CCP via the traditional route (i.e.: complete an application, take and submit PCAT scores, attend a Mandatory Campus Visit, etc.).
