College of Nursing & Health Professions

Overview

The College of Nursing and Health Professions offers both bachelor’s and master’s degree programs accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). The learning environment at Lewis is one of personalization, with small class sizes and individualized attention to students. The nursing programs are structured to reflect the need for interactive classroom participation among students and their instructors. The programs for Registered Nurses place an emphasis on the sharing of professional experience in classroom discussions.

The College of Nursing and Health Professions faculty promote Lasallian and Catholic values by creating an environment which fosters critical thinking, enlightenment, compassion, and community in all teaching, learning and service. Educational outcomes are based on curricula and experiences that integrate the concepts of person, health, environment and the health care professional. Nursing practice is based upon the American Nurses’ Association standards of practice that reflect the perceived needs of a changing society.

The baccalaureate program offered is for traditional (prelicensure) and Registered Nurse (degree completion) students. Upon successful completion of the nursing curriculum, the graduate is awarded the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and is eligible to apply to write the national examination for licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse. The College also offers a Bachelor's to BSN for adults who already hold a Bachelor's degree and wish to enter the field of nursing.

Both the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) and the RN/BSN degree completion programs are offered in an accelerated format to meet the unique needs of the working registered professional nurse. Most MSN classes meet one evening per week for four hours in eight- week sessions. Selected courses and programs are offered both online and face-to-face to meet the individual needs of working students. The RN/BSN program also offers daytime options. The accelerated format, with flexible scheduling options and multiple locations, appeals to nurses whose personal and professional commitments might otherwise limit their ability to pursue additional education. Multiple locations throughout the northern Illinois area include on-site programs at area healthcare organizations and at the Lewis campuses in Oak Brook, Tinley Park, Hickory Hills, Shorewood and Romeoville.
