26-505 Research in Counseling and Guidance (3)
This course surveys qualitative
and quantitative methods of research; experimental and observational
research designs are covered. Both descriptive and inferential statistics
are reviewed.
26-508 Advanced Psychobiology (3)
This course reviews neural and hormonal physiology and function,
with an emphasis on pathology.
26-510 Psychological and Educational Assessment (3)
This course covers
psychometric theory, aptitude testing,
self-report measures, and objective evaluations of personality.
26-511 Individual Appraisal (3)
This course is a focused review
of administration and interpretation of standardized tests as
they are used in educational and clinical settings.
26-512 Interviewing Skills (3)
This course teaches basic and advanced
listening skills and interviewing techniques specific to major
mental illnesses, common problems in living and clients of
diverse cultures and
ages. Students
use interview data to make diagnostic formulations and treatment
plans.
26-513 Individual Appraisal: Child and Adolescent Emphasis
(3)
This course teaches the administration and interpretation
of standardized tests and protocols in the areas of intellectual
and personality assessment
with
an emphasis on children and adolescents. Students gain experience
using the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children as well
as behavior
rating scales
and personality inventories. Interviewing children and adolescents
also is covered.
26-514 Diagnosis of the Learning Disabled (3)
This course
emphasizes the use of cognitive assessment techniques in
educational settings.
26-520 Advanced Developmental Psychology (3)
This course
examines theories and research as they relate to normal
development from childhood through
young adulthood.
26-522 Career Development Theory (3)
This course is a
study of career development theory as it relates to
career choice
and change through the life cycle. The course relates
theory to guidance practices
in career
assessment
and counseling.
26-530 Advanced Personality Theory (3)
Freudian, neo-analytic, humanistic and existential
theories are examined for their contributions to
the explanation of personality development. Delineation of normal
from abnormal development
is emphasized.
26-541 Psychopathology (3)
This course examines the
classification and etiology of major mental illnesses
and emotional
and behavioral disorders. The interaction between
diagnosis, proposed etiology
and treatment plan is
discussed.
26-543 Psychopathology: Child
Emphasis (3)
This course examines the classification
and etiology of major mental illnesses and emotional,
developmental and
behavioral disorders with an emphasis on children
and adolescents.
Students
are exposed
to the
interrelationship between diagnosis, etiology,
and treatment planning.
26-550 Workshop in Counseling
Psychology (1)
This workshop provides an intensive
application of theory and technique to a specific
problem area.
26-565 Group Therapy (3)
Small group dynamics
are used to explore individual concerns and
potentials. Principles of group
dynamics
and types of structured
group experiences are also discussed.
26-567 Treatment of Substance Abuse (3)
This course explores both assessment and
treatment principles for working with patients
with a
variety of substance abuse and dependence
problems.

and Guidance (3)
A survey course designed
to explore practical applications of
counseling principles
and theories, this course is introductory
and exploratory in nature
with an emphasis on the acquisition of
skills.

Therapies (3)
The course explores theoretical
stances and
treatment modalities as seen from
psychodynamic, existential and humanistic
orientations. Prerequisite:
26-512.
26-572 Counseling Theories: Behavior
and Cognitive Therapies (3)
This
course presents principles of behavioral treatment,
cognitive-behavioral treatment and
cognitive
therapy. Both theoretical stances
and treatment
techniques
are studied. Prerequisite: 26-512.

and Adolescent Psychotherapy (3)
This course explores theoretical approaches and
treatment modalities commonly utilized
with children and adolescents
in counseling.
26-575 Family Dynamics and Family
Therapy (3)
This course approaches
pathology as originating in troubled
social systems. Both theory
and techniques of intervention
are discussed. Prerequisite:
26-512.
26-576 Organization of Guidance
Services (3)
Exploration of ethics,
administration and delivery
of guidance systems in the
public school is the focus
of this course.
26-578 Professional Issues
in
Counseling (3)
This course
offers an
intensive series of readings
and discussions focusing
on professional issues in
counseling, including ethics,
supervision,
consultation
and diversity issues.
26-579 Multicultural Issues
in
Counseling (3)
This course
explores all aspects of
diversity as they
relate to the counseling
process. Students examine
their own cultural
background and explore
issues regarding race,
religion, gender, and sexual
orientation.
26-580 Models and Theories
of Supervision in Mental
Health (3)
This
course
provides an overview
of models and theories
of supervision in mental
health and prepares students
to be
clinical supervisors
of other mental health
professionals. Prerequisites:

supervised service
delivery in elementary or secondary
school settings.

of 100 hours of service
delivery activities.

development training
in counseling
and human development
organizations. Requires
100 hours of service
delivery activities.

Students participate
in supervised

a

Students participate

26-598 Research and Thesis (3)
Students design and execute research, and
write a thesis or research report about their projects under the direction
of an advisor. Prerequisites: 26-505 and approval by the advisor.
26-599 Independent Study (1-3)
This course offers a directed, individualized
study of an advanced topic. Prerequisite: Consent of instructor.
05-511 Survey of Exceptional Children and Adolescents (3)
The foundations
of special education, including a detailed study of laws, guaranteed
rights and current educational referral procedures pertaining to
students with special
needs are emphasized. Identification and diagnosis of non-traditional
learners, the referral process, and the impact of integration are
stressed.
05-576 Social and Multicultural Foundations of Education (3)
This
course examines the demographic variables involved in the public/private
school
as a social system. Emphasis is on the research into the correlations
between the variables and student achievement, faculty empowerment,
and administrative
effectiveness.

56-531 Classroom Management for School Counselors (3)
This course will focus
on various issues of teaching and learning and the process of transforming
subject matter knowledge into teaching materials and instructional
strategies for secondary and middle school classrooms. Stressing the needs
of secondary
school students, particularly considering them as learners and knowers
as well as members of communities, this course will give participants experiences
and practice in the design and development of lesson plans and various
instructional
methodologies. This course offers students the opportunity to develop
skills in several aspects of the classroom discipline: teaching strategies,
learning
styles, evaluation students and current secondary school trends.
56-548 Educational Organization and Administration for Counselors
(3)
This course presents the organizational and administrative structures
of public and private educational institutions in America. Particular
emphasis is placed on the structure and function of public schools as it
relates
to
counseling in Illinois.
