Reading Teacher Endorsement
Students seeking to obtain a Master of Education degree in Curriculum and
Instruction: Reading Teacher Endorsement must meet certain criteria.
These include the following:
- a valid initial or standard Illinois Teaching Certificate (Type
03, 04, 09, 10);
- submit evidence of passing grade on Illinois Certification Basic
Skills Test;
- fulfillment of the requirement Illinois House Bill 150 (Survey
of Exceptional Children and Adolescents or Exceptional Learners
in Inclusive Classrooms); and
- successful completion of the following program requirements.
52-504 Technology in the Reading and Writing Program (1)
51-505 Designs for Teaching and Learning (3)
52-509 Child and Adolescent Literature (3)
52-523 Foundations and Methods of Teaching Reading Grades 4-12,
Including the Content Areas (clinical hours) (3)
52-524 Foundations and Methods of Teaching Reading Grades
P-3 (clinical hours) (3)
52-527 Teaching Reading to the Diverse Learner (clinical
hours) (3)
52-528 Clinical Diagnosis and Remediation of Reading Problems
(clinical hours) (3)
52-533 Methods and Strategies for Reading Comprehension Instruction
Including Instructional Practicum for the Reading Teacher
(clinical hours) (3)
52-534 Teaching Writing in the Literacy Program (2)
51-557 Curriculum and Instruction (3)
52-575 Practical Research for Learning Communities (3)
30 credit hours total are required for M.Ed. in
Curriculum and Instruction: Reading Teacher Endorsement.
The design of the above program requires that an individual
have at least three hours of previous graduate or undergraduate
coursework in reading. Any additional requests for course
transfer will have to be considered individually and will not
exceed an
additional six graduate hours. Certain core courses may
not be transferred. Anyone who does not have three hours of previous
course-work
can fulfill that deficiency through Lewis University.
STATE ASSESSMENT REQUIREMENTS
At the conclusion of the program, candidates seeking a Reading
Teacher Endorsement must pass the Illinois Certification Test for the
Reading Teacher.
READING TEACHER ENDORSEMENT WITHOUT A DEGREE
To obtain a Reading Teacher Endorsement, the State requires 24
hours of coursework in targeted reading areas. This program leads
to a Reading Teacher Endorsement, but not an additional degree.
Criteria to enter this program include the following:
- a valid initial or standard Illinois Teaching Certificate (Type 03,
04, 09, 10);
- submit evidence of passing grade on Illinois Certification Basic
Skills Test;
- fulfillment of the requirement Illinois House Bill 150 (Survey
of Exceptional Children and Adolescents or Exceptional Learners
in Inclusive
Classrooms); and
- successful completion of the following program requirements.
Prerequisite: one 3 credit hour course
in Reading (3)
52-504 Technology in the Reading and Writing Program (1)
52-509 Child and Adolescent
Literature (3)
52-523 Foundations and Methods of Teaching Reading Grades 4-12
including the Content Areas (clinical hours) (3)

24 credit hours total are required for Reading Teacher Endorsement.
The State Certification rules will allow both undergraduate and graduate
work for the Reading Teacher Endorsement. The design of the above program
requires that an individual have at least three hours of previous coursework
in reading. Any additional request for course transfer will have to
