Mission Statement

The Department of English at Lewis University is informed by and committed to the liberal arts tradition, which values the intellectual and imaginative life of the mind, and to the study of the humanities, which advance that life. We are also committed to providing students with the opportunities to fall in love with language, with its powers of story and style that move us to see ourselves, others, and the world in new ways, and to take action to better that world. We invite our students to become not only careful and critical readers, but also creators of texts, in all forms, by coming to understand how language works, how it affects us, and how we may use it as a mode of inquiry and discovery.

In short, the Department of English prepares students to

  • Read the evolving literary tradition
  • Compose with innovation
  • Engage confidently in the profession
