Internships

English majors are encouraged to perform an internship in the outside community on a rotating basis or in-house on a regular basis through the three options listed below:

  • The English Department Internship
  • The Writing Center Internship
  • The Jet Fuel Review Internship

1. The English Department Internship

This 1 credit - 5 hours per week - professional writing internship offers the student opportunities to write and design press releases, news articles, fund raising appeals, a newsletter for each semester, and possible website updates and program brochures. This internship will be coordinated by Dr. Muench and supervised by Dr. Consilio; the student will receive training in design as well as feedback on content and will learn to "write" visual as well as prose materials. The student will work in the main English office.

Qualifications: English major with at least a 3.0 English GPA; junior or senior status; resume and email letter of interest; consensus of the English faculty.

2. The Writing Center Internship

The Writing Center Internship is taken for either 2 credit hours at 10 hours per week, or 3 credit hours at 15 hours per week. The WC intern will register with the English Department Internship Director, Dr. Simone Muench, and will collaborate with and be supervised by the Director of the Writing Center, Dr. Jennifer Consilio. This internship offers English majors the opportunity to write, design, and edit professional documents for both print and online publication, for authentic purposes and audiences. The Writing Center Intern will be an important member of the WC staff, one who will help generate interest in and understanding about the roles and services of the Writing Center.

Specifically, the WC Intern will:

  • write, design, and edit the Writing Center newsletter, for both print and
  • online publication (one or two newsletters per semester);
  • develop marketing materials for the Writing Center;
  • create and implement campus-wide writing activities;
  • develop print and online content for tutoring.

WC Interns are also encouraged to identify and create other opportunities for WC-related writing/document projects- projects that will help expand their skills and expertise and fulfill their own internship goals.

Qualifications: English major with at least a 3.0 English GPA; junior or senior status; completed internship application; interview with the Director of the Writing Center.

3. The Jet Fuel Review Internship

The Jet Fuel Review internship is taken for either 1 credit hour at 5 hours per week, 2 credit hours at 10 hours per week, or 3 credit hours at 15 hours per week. The JFR Intern will register with the English Department Internship Director, Dr. Simone Muench, and will also collaborate with and be supervised by the Director of Program Three, Dr. Simone Muench. This internship offers English majors the opportunity to read, write, create, and edit creative and professional documents for online publication for both the online literary journal, Jet Fuel Review, and its supplementary publication, The Jet Fuel Review blog.

Specifically, the JFR Intern will:

  • solicit, collate, select, and edit material to be published in the online
    journal and the blog
  • help keep both the journal and blog current by focusing on editorial
    assistance, online feature writing, blog management (Student, Faculty,
    Alumni Features), and social media management (Facebook page)
  • help organize and develop the layout of the website and the blog, and
    design forthcoming issues as well as create various print and web material
    related to the journal and blog
  • help organize and oversee the bi-annual Jet Fuel Review new issue
    launch
  • attend weekly meetings

Qualifications: English major with at least a 3.0 English GPA; junior or senior status; completed internship application; interview with the Director of Program Three.
