AVIATION AND TRANSPORTATION/MASTER OF SCIENCE

OVERVIEW

The Master of Science in Aviation and Transportation, designed to prepare professional managers in the transportation industry, will consider the current transportation industry and the industry’s regulation from a variety of perspectives. The student will develop an appreciation of human factors and the importance of research in decision making and will develop skills in communication, human resource management, budgeting, and quality assurance. The program includes a course on ethical issues in the industry and incorporates the moral and ethical dimensions of decision making and interpersonal relations in all coursework. The program will ensure that students understand the importance of integrity, fairness, and respect of diverse cultural traditions in their roles as leaders in this critical field.

There are two concentrations available in this program. The “administration” concentration focuses on the business side of transportation, while the “security” concentration focuses on the safety and security side of the industry. Either concentration can provide the graduate with expanded career advancement opportunities in today’s ever growing transportation industry.

To accommodate the needs of working professionals, this program is offered in the evening for either part-time or full-time students. Courses are taught in an eight week format and are offered so that at least two courses can be taken each semester. Summer coursework is also a possibility.

ADMISION REQUIREMENTS

All candidates for admission must possess a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education with either a major in a related field or work experience in a related field. The applicant’s undergraduate GPA must be 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale. The GPA can be calculated on the most recent 60 semester hours of coursework. Additionally, applicants must submit:

A completed application (along with a nonrefundable application fee).
Academic transcripts from each institution attended.
A one-to-two page personal statement describing the applicant's background, and how the degree relates to applicant's career goals.
Three letters of recommendation (one from a faculty member familiar with the applicant’s academic performance, one from an employer, and one from anyone who can attest to the applicant’s likely success in the program).

When the application materials are complete, they will be forwarded to the University Graduate Council. The Council has the final say in graduate admissions. After Graduate Council review, the applicant will then be informed in writing of its decision.

PROVISIONAL ADMISSION

Under certain circumstances, students who do not meet the GPA requirement (GPA below 3.0, but above 2.5) for full admission may be admitted to the program with provisional status. Provisionally admitted students must complete the first nine semester hours of graduate study with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. After nine hours of completed coursework, their application will be reviewed again for full admission. This decision will be made by the Chair of the Department and the Program Director.

TRANSFER OF GRADUATE CREDIT

A maximum of only six semester hours of graduate level work earned from a regionally accredited institution of higher education will be accepted toward a Master of Science degree in Aviation and Transportation. Only courses in which the student received a grade of B or higher will be eligible for transfer credit. Prior coursework should be current and within the last five years.

All transfer credits must be documented and approved before full admission into the program will be granted. Students who wish to take courses elsewhere (after matriculation at Lewis) must receive prior written approval from the Program Director. In approving the proposal to transfer credit from another institution, the Program Director may, at his or her discretion, require that the student pass a proficiency exam for the corresponding course to qualify and to transfer the credit.

Credit can be granted for graduate-level learning from experience that the student is able to demonstrate and document in a prior learning portfolio. This credit must be approved by the Program Director, Department Chair, and the College Dean.

GRADE POINT REQUIREMENT

Students admitted to the Aviation and Transportation program must maintain a 3.0 GPA. Any student whose cumulative GPA falls below 3.0 will automatically be placed on academic probation. While on probation, the student must achieve a GPA of 3.0 or better on continued coursework. If a student does not meet this GPA requirement in two semesters, he/she will be dropped from the program. Only grades attained in Lewis University graduate courses will be used to determine the GPA. A grade of D will not count toward degree requirements, and that coursework must be repeated. A 3.0 cumulative GPA is required for graduation.

TIME LIMITATION FOR COMPLETING THE PROGRAM

A student must complete all graduation requirements within five years from completion of the first graduate course taken at Lewis University.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

The Master of Science in Aviation and Transportation curriculum consists of 39 total credits. Within these 39 credits are a required core of 27 hours, and a concentration of 12 hours. The student must select an emphasis of either Administration or Safety and Security. Credit earned in a graduate course may not be counted toward more than one degree. To graduate from the program, the student must complete 39 hours of credit, maintain a 3.0 GPA, and pass a department comprehensive exam. The curriculum is as follows:
